Zara Tindall appeared overjoyed to see her uncle King Charles back out and about on Friday, as he made a surprise appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Heartwarming images show Zara pull the monarch in for a warm embrace and a kiss shortly after he arrived at the staple royal event.

The King is in high spirits at the event, hosted in the grounds of Windsor Castle, and is undeterred by the wet and grey weather as he spoke to officials under the cover of umbrellas.

Wearing a large parker coat to shield him from the elements, the 75-year-old monarch looked delighted to be at day three of the event – just three days after he returned to public-facing duties.

It marks a further sign that the King’s health is improving and he is responding well to treatment, after being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer at the start of the year.

The late Queen Elizabeth used to regularly attend the Windsor Horse Show, hosted on the grounds of Windsor Castle, as a spectator and even entered some horses into the event.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Anne have attended the show over the past few days, which is running from May 1-5.

The annual event, which attracts enthusiasts from around the world, sees many join together in their thousands on the grounds of Windsor Castle for international competitions in show jumping, dressage, driving and endurance.

This week saw the monarch return to public-facing duties for the first time since he revealed his cancer diagnosis at the start of February.

On Tuesday, the King and Queen met with patients and staff at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in London during their visit.
